Have a Yellowing Lawn? Here’s How to Stop It

Published : 02/26/2021

Has your lush, green lawn suddenly started to turn yellow? These yellow patches on your lawn can have many different causes, that can have lasting results on your lawn.

Some common causes of yellowing lawn include dryness, excess nitrogen, and pests or diseases.

Excessive hot weather and exposure to the sun can quickly dehydrate your turf. Heat stress and sun burn can cause discolouration and damage. A solution to this is to water during the early mornings, and apply wetting agents at the beginning of summer to ensure your lawn properly utilize the water you apply.

Nitrogen is great for your lawn, but only in moderation. High levels of nitrogen can change the pH of your lawn, resulting in harsh chemical burns. Your lawn collects nitrogen through three avenues, the atmosphere, fertilizing, and dog urine. The best way to minimize damage is to prevent it from happening. Hire a professional to fertilise your lawn to prevent doing any more damage to your lawn.

Most fungal grass infections will cause your lawn to turn yellow. Temperature, moisture, and overall lawn health levels all affect how susceptible your lawn is to fungal infections. To prevent fungal infections make sure you practice correct lawn care, water in the early morning, and ensure your lawn has adequate drainage.

Lawn mites are also a common cause of yellowing lawn. One way to check if you have lawn grubs or mites is to inspect your lawn with a magnifying glass. The use of preventative and reactive pesticides will ensure your lawn is free of pests.
