Grass Guide – Prestige Buffalo

Published : 12/03/2021

Prestige Buffalo is the newest Buffalo variety on the market, and is quickly becoming a popular choice among Australian home owners. This turf variety is bred from Palmetto Buffalo to better suit the Australian climate, it has all the benefits of its predecessor and more!

Prestige Buffalo holds its colour amazingly in shaded areas and throughout winter. It is also extremely resistant to the cold winters and harsh droughts we experience in Australia. Prestige is also the darkest green Buffalo available on the market today.

This turf type offers lawn owners a great looking, low maintenance lawn. With all the benefits of this lawn it is easy to see why Prestige Buffalo is becoming one of the most popular turf types on the east coast.

Mowing

During warmer months it is recommended that you mow Palmetto every 7-10 days during warmer months and every 3-6 weeks in colder months.

Mowing height will vary from 2 to 7cm depending on the amount of sunlight the lawn is getting daily.

Watering

If your lawn is not yet established, regular, deep watering will encourage the growth of a deep root system, which is essential to this turf types drought resistance.

Once your lawn is established you will only need to thoroughly water when needed. Keep an eye out for wilting in the leaves, this is usually once every 7 to 10 days in the warmer months.

Weeds, Pests & Diseases

Prestige is more resistant to weeds, pests, and diseases in comparison to other turf varieties, but it is not completely immune to any of these.

When weeds begin popping up in your lawn hand eradication is advised before seed heads develop. If you don’t spot it until after seed heads have sprouted, a suitable herbicide will do the trick.

Be sure to use a herbicide that is safe for buffalo grasses as any application of weed killers, especially Broad leaf herbicides may damage or kill buffalo, leaving brown patches all over your lawn. This is due to the same principle being used to attach the herbicide to the leaves of the weed can work in the same manner when applied to Buffalo.

Prestige grass has a high resistance to pests, but it is recommended to watch for Army Worm and African Black Beetle during their peak periods.

Prestige Buffalo, similarly to Palmetto, is fairly resistant to disease, however one that you may see popping up on your lawn is Brown Patch. You can read more about Brown Patch here.
